Biodex Balance System

The Biodex balance system is a tool to supplement balance evaluations and treatment for post-surgical patients or those with less than perfect balance. Athletes who are returning to highly coordinated and competive sports use the Biodex to best prepare for rapid reflex movements. It can also be used for anyone with high fall risk or balance dysfunction as a component of their treatment program.

The computerized Biodex reports, direct the therapist to a clearer understanding of which quadrants of movement are the most challenging for each balance patient. Comparisons by age, gender and normative data are also made. Once this component of balance is carefully evaluated a specific treatment program using the Biodex may significantly impact balance reactions. A variety of timed, weight shifting and balance recovery protocols may be used.

The Biodex Balance System evaluates neuromuscular control by quantifying the ability to maintain dynamic postural stability on an unstable surface.

The degree of surface instability is controlled by a microprocessor-based actuator. The test consists of recording the patient's ability to control the platform variance from a perfectly balanced position. A large variance is indicative of poor control and balance. Further definition is realized with the quantification of Anterior/Posterior and Medial/Lateral response.

Tests are started with a completely firm surface. Progressing to a variety of stability levels, up to 20 degrees of support surface tilt, to ensure increased stimulation of joint mechanoreceptors.
